Creating an Earn Rule in Reorbit
Reward customers with loyalty points for orders, account sign-ups, social follows, and reviews. Step-by-step guide to creating earn rules in Reorbit.
Reward your customers with points for the actions you care about — placing orders, creating an account, following you on social, leaving reviews, and more.
What is an Earn Rule?
An Earn Rule defines how a customer earns loyalty points. Each rule is tied to a single customer action (called an interaction) — for example, “Order Placed” or “Visit Instagram Profile” — and specifies how many points that action is worth, who’s eligible, and how often it can be rewarded.
You can run as many earn rules at once as you like. Your rules appear on the Earn points page, grouped by category.
Every earn rule, and where its own guide is
When you create a rule, you choose from four categories. Each rule type below has its own article with the exact fields and a worked example.

Join the loyalty program, Points per Amount Spent and Write a Review are the most common starting points for a new program.
Before you start
- Make sure you have an active plan — rule authoring is paused without one. (See Plan & billing.)
- Decide how many points the action should be worth.
- Decide whether the rule should apply to all customers and products or only a subset (you can refine this with inclusions and exclusions).
Step-by-step: create an Earn Rule
1. Open the Earn points page
From the app, go to Settings → Earn points. You’ll see your existing rules grouped by category, and a line telling you how many of them are active.
2. Start a new rule
Click Create rule in the top-right corner. A Choose a rule type window opens, listing every available action grouped by category.
3. Choose a rule type
Click the action you want to reward (for example, Points per Amount Spent). Reorbit opens the configuration page for that rule type.
4. Configure the rule
Depending on the rule type, you’ll see some or all of the following sections:
| Section | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Rule Name | What customers see in the launcher and on the rewards page. (Required.) The rule’s icon follows from its type — there’s nothing to pick. |
| Rule reward | The number of points the customer earns, plus any threshold the type needs. (Required.) |
| Eligibility Period | Optional start and end dates. Leave blank to run the rule indefinitely. |
| Points Holding Period | A delay (in days) before earned points land in the customer’s balance. 0 = immediately. It works on Join the loyalty program, Write a Review, Upload a Photo and Upload a Video only — see the note below before you set it on anything else. |
| Earning Limits | Maximum uses per customer, plus a Frequency: Unlimited, Day, Week, Month, Year, or Lifetime. |
| Inclusions & exclusions | Restrict the rule by customer tags and by products, or exclude the same. |
In the sidebar you’ll also find:
| Section | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Rule Status | Set the rule Active or Disabled. Disabled rules are saved but don’t award points. |
How Earning Limits actually count. Unlimited sets no cap. Lifetime allows a single use per customer, ever. Any other frequency caps uses within a rolling window of that length — 2 + Month allows two uses in any rolling month, not two per calendar month.
Not every rule shows every section. Some rules have their limit fixed by the rule itself, so the Earning Limits section states it instead of offering the control — Join the loyalty program (once ever), Celebrate Your Birthday and Celebrate Account Anniversary (once per occasion), Subscribe to Newsletter and the social rules (once per customer). Celebrate Your Birthday, Subscribe to Newsletter and the social rules have no Points Holding Period either. Each rule’s own article lists exactly what it shows.
The Points Holding Period does nothing on order rules. Points per Amount Spent, Order Placed, Order Milestone, Minimum Order Value and Celebrate Account Anniversary all show the field, but the points aren’t held — they land as soon as the rule pays. Leave it at
0on those five. To hold points from an order, use When points become available on the Earn points page instead — see Order Points Settings.
5. Save
When you make a change, a Save bar appears at the top of the page. Click Save to publish the rule, or Discard to undo your changes. After saving, you’ll return to the Earn points page and the new rule appears in its category with an Active badge.
Managing existing rules
On the Earn points page, each rule has a ⋯ (More actions) menu:
- Edit — change any setting; saving updates the live rule.
- Delete — permanently removes the rule (it stops awarding points immediately).
Tips & best practices
- Start with the popular rules. Join the loyalty program + Points per Amount Spent + Write a Review covers most programs.
- Guard order points with When points become available, not with the rule’s Points Holding Period — the holding period is ignored on order rules. A few days is the right size for it.
- Use Earning Limits on UGC rules so points can’t be farmed. Social, newsletter, signup and the two milestone rules are already capped by the rule itself and offer nothing to set.
- Use Inclusions/Exclusions to run a promotion on specific products, or for a specific customer segment (by customer tag), without creating a separate program.
- Set an Eligibility Period for seasonal or launch campaigns so rules expire automatically.
FAQ
Can I run two earn rules for the same action?
Yes — and whether both pay depends on whether they’re the same rule type.
- Same type (two Points per Amount Spent rules, say): only the one worth the most points pays; the others stand down. This is what makes a double-points campaign safe to run alongside your standard rule.
- Different types: both pay. Points per Amount Spent and Minimum Order Value fire on the same order. Write a Review, Upload a Photo and Upload a Video all fire on the same review.
So when you add a rule, check which case you’re in — it decides whether you’ve built a bonus or a rule that will never pay.
Why isn’t a customer earning points from my rule?
Check that the rule’s Status is Active, the action falls within the Eligibility Period, the customer/product isn’t caught by an Exclusion, the customer hasn’t hit the Earning Limit, and that no higher-value rule for the same action out-paid it.
What’s the difference between a delay and an eligibility period?
The Eligibility Period controls when the rule is live. The Points Holding Period (delay) controls how long after earning the points become spendable — on the rules that honour it, which are Join the loyalty program, Write a Review, Upload a Photo and Upload a Video. For order rules, the equivalent is When points become available on the Earn points page.
How do I stop points being spent on an order that gets refunded?
Two settings on Settings → Earn points, and they answer different halves of it. When points become available holds order points for a few days, which covers the fast case — spend the points, then refund. Take points back when an order is refunded or cancelled reverses the award whenever the refund lands, including weeks later. You can use either, both or neither. What won’t help is the rule’s own Points Holding Period: order rules ignore it.
Can I pick my own icon for a rule?
Not yet. A rule’s icon follows from its type, so an Instagram rule gets the Instagram mark and a review rule gets a review mark. The Rule Name is yours to write, and it’s what customers actually read.
Can I reward customers for referring a friend from here?
No — referrals are authored on their own screen, under Settings → Referrals, and pay a discount rather than points. (See Referrals.)
