Program Setups That Work — Reorbit Recipes
Five complete loyalty and review programs you can copy field by field: a starter program, a review flywheel, a VIP ladder, a referral offer, and a seasonal campaign.
Five complete builds, with every field filled in. Copy one, change the numbers to suit your margins, and you have a working program in half an hour.
First, the one decision everything else rests on
What is a point worth?
Nearly every program that goes wrong goes wrong here — rewards priced one at a time until nothing lines up and customers only ever redeem the accidental bargain.
Pick a rate and hold it. These recipes all use:
1 point per $1 spent · 100 points = $1 of reward — a 1% program. It’s the standard starting point, it’s affordable at almost any margin, and every number below follows from it.
Want to be more generous? Change the earn rate, not the reward prices. 2 points per dollar with the same rewards is a 2% program, and nothing else needs rethinking.
Recipe 1 — The Starter Program
Time: ~30 minutes · Best for: a store launching loyalty for the first time
Three earn rules, three rewards. Enough to be worth joining, small enough to explain in a sentence.
Earn rules
| # | Rule type | Rule Name | Key fields |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Join the loyalty program | Get 200 points just for joining |
Reward 200 · once per customer |
| 2 | Points per Amount Spent | Earn 1 point per $1 spent |
Reward 1 · Unlimited |
| 3 | Write a Review | Review a product — 100 points |
Points 100 · Limits 4 per Month |
Rewards
| # | Reward type | Rule Name | Key fields |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Free Shipping | Free shipping — 300 points |
Points 300 · Max shipping 10 · Expiry 60 days · Return points ✅ |
| 2 | Fixed Amount Discount | $5 off — 500 points |
Points 500 · Value 5 · Min order 25 · Expiry 60 days · Return points ✅ |
| 3 | Fixed Amount Discount | $25 off — 2,500 points |
Points 2500 · Value 25 · Min order 75 · Expiry 60 days · Return points ✅ |
Then
- Switch on the Loyalty Rewards Widget in your theme. (See Adding Reorbit to your storefront.)
- Turn on the Welcome message so new members are told their starting balance. (See Get started with retention triggers.)
What a customer experiences: joins and immediately has 200 points — 40% of the way to free shipping. One $60 order gets them there. It works because the first reward is reachable on day one.
Recipe 2 — The Review Flywheel
Time: ~45 minutes · Best for: a store with traffic but not enough social proof
Loyalty and reviews reinforcing each other: points buy reviews, reviews sell products, products earn points.
Earn rules
| # | Rule type | Rule Name | Key fields |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Write a Review | Review a product — 100 points |
Points 100 · Limits 4 per Month |
| 2 | Upload a Photo | Add a photo — 150 bonus points |
Points 150 · Limits 4 per Month |
| 3 | Upload a Video | Add a video — 250 bonus points |
Points 250 · Limits 4 per Month |
A review with a photo and a video pays 500 points — one whole reward. That’s the ceiling, chosen deliberately, because a video review is the single most valuable thing a customer can hand you.
Messages
Settings → Automated messages
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Most messages per customer, per week | 2 |
| Review Request → When to ask | Automatically, but never sooner than my minimum — set the minimum to cover your shipping time |
| Review Request → Product Prioritization | Most likely to be reviewed |
| Review Reminder → Days after the request was sent | 7 |
Moderation
Settings → Review moderation
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Publish reviews automatically | On |
| Hold reviews rated below | 4 |
| How long to hold them | 3 days |
Three days to reply to a critical review before it publishes. It always publishes — the window buys you a response, not a veto.
Then
- Add the Reviews Summary near your price and the Reviews Widget below your product details.
- Connect Klaviyo and build the flow that sends the review request. Nothing sends until you do. (See How Review Requests Work.)
- Group your variants so a review on one colourway shows on all of them. (See Creating Review Groupings.)
Recipe 3 — The VIP Ladder
Time: ~40 minutes · Best for: a store with returning customers worth separating out
Build this on top of Recipe 1 — tiers reward points earned, so the earn rules have to exist first.
The ladder
Create tiers from Settings → VIP tiers, then order them highest-first.
| Tier | Minimum points | Perks | Welcome reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | 1,000 |
Early access | Bonus points 250 |
| Gold | 5,000 |
Early access · Free shipping | Bonus points 1,000 |
| Platinum | 15,000 |
Early access · Free shipping · Custom: first look at new drops | Bonus points 3,000 |
Program settings
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification metric | Points earned | The only metric tiers use |
| Qualification start date | today’s date | Set this. Without it, years of history sort your whole customer base into tiers the moment you launch |
| Maintenance window | Rolling window | Status should reflect recent loyalty |
| Window length | 365 days |
|
| Downgrade grace period | 30 days |
Nobody gets demoted overnight |
| Higher tiers inherit lower tiers’ perks | On | Gold shouldn’t lose early access |
| Grant welcome rewards for skipped tiers | On | A big spender who jumps to Gold gets both rewards |
| Base member label | Member |
What pre-tier customers are called |
Tier rules — the part that makes climbing worth it
Open a saved tier and add a tier rule: an earn rule only that tier’s members (and above) can be paid by.
| Tier | Tier rule | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | Points per Amount Spent at 2 |
Double points |
| Gold | Points per Amount Spent at 3 |
Triple points |
| Platinum | Points per Amount Spent at 4 |
Quadruple points |
When a tier rule and your standard rule both match an order, the higher-paying one pays — so members earn at their tier’s rate. It replaces the standard award rather than stacking on top of it.
Two things to weigh here. Points values are whole numbers, so your accelerator steps are 2×, 3×, 4× rather than something finer — which means each step is a real jump in what you’re giving back (2%, 3%, then 4% of revenue at the top). If that’s steeper than you want, hold every tier rule at
2and let perks and welcome rewards do the differentiating instead. Status motivates plenty on its own.
Making perks real at checkout
A perk is a description until you back it with Shopify. Reorbit keeps a tag (vip-tier:<name>) on members, so build a Shopify automatic discount targeting that tag — free shipping for vip-tier:gold, for instance. The discount then follows anyone who joins or leaves the tier.
Recipe 4 — The Referral Offer
Time: ~20 minutes · Best for: a store whose customers already recommend it informally
Both sides get the same thing, so the offer fits in one sentence: give 15%, get 15%.
The two rules
Settings → Referrals → Create rule
| Role | Reward type | Rule Name | Key fields |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friend | Percentage Off Discount | 15% off your first order |
Value 15 · Min order 40 · Prefix FRIEND · Expiry 30 days |
| Advocate | Percentage Off Discount | 15% off when your friend orders |
Value 15 · Min order 40 · Prefix THANKS · Expiry 60 days |
Remember: referrals pay a discount, not points. Neither side spends or earns any.
Program settings
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Refund hold (days) | 14 |
Don’t pay out on orders that come straight back |
| Per-advocate daily cap | 3 |
Blocks bulk link-spamming |
| Per-advocate lifetime cap | 25 |
Stops one customer becoming an unmanaged affiliate |
| Referred friend must be a new customer | ✅ On | Otherwise it’s just a discount |
| Self-referral checks | ✅ Email · ✅ Address | The most common abuse, blocked at no cost |
Then
Make sure the loyalty widget is live — the Refer a friend card is where advocates get their link, and it stays hidden until a referral rule is active. Buyers also see their link on the checkout thank-you page automatically.
Recipe 5 — The Seasonal Campaign
Time: ~10 minutes · Best for: Black Friday, a launch, a slow month
Two rules with Eligibility Periods, so they switch themselves off. That’s the whole trick — a campaign you have to remember to end is one you’ll forget.
Double points weekend
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Rule type | Points per Amount Spent |
| Rule Name | Double points this weekend — 2 points per $1 |
| Reward | 2 |
| Eligibility Period | Friday → Monday |
Your standard 1-point rule stays active. Over the weekend both match, the higher pays, and on Tuesday the campaign rule stops on its own.
Basket builder
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Rule type | Minimum Order Value |
| Rule Name | Spend $100, get 200 bonus points |
| Points | 200 |
| Minimum Order Amount | 100 |
| Eligibility Period | the two campaign weeks |
| Earning Limits | 1 per Month |
This one is a different rule type from your baseline, so it pays on top — a $110 order earns 110 points plus 200.
The rule that catches everyone out
Two rules of the same type never stack. When several rules match the same action, the highest-paying one pays and the rest stand down. That’s why the double-points rule can sit safely alongside your standard rule.
Different rule types do pay together. Points per Amount Spent and Minimum Order Value both fire on one order. Write a Review, Upload a Photo and Upload a Video all fire on one review.
So when you add a rule, ask which it is. It’s the difference between a bonus and a no-op.
Before you launch, whichever recipe you picked
- The Loyalty Rewards Widget is switched on in your theme
- At least one reward is reachable within a couple of orders
- When points become available on the Earn points page is set to a few days —
3is the default for new stores — so order points can’t be earned, spent and refunded in one sitting. (Don’t set this to your returns window; Take points back when an order is refunded or cancelled, on the same page, handles a refund weeks later. See Order Points Settings.) - Your rewards all use the same points-to-currency rate
- Klaviyo is connected if you want any message to actually send
- You’ve placed a test order and watched the points arrive
