Subscribe to Newsletter — Earn Rule Example
Award points when a customer opts into your email marketing. The exact fields, a worked example, how qualification works, and the double opt-in gotcha.
Points for joining your mailing list. It grows the one marketing channel you own, and it costs a one-off award.
Where: Settings → Earn points → Create rule → Account → Subscribe to Newsletter
What it does
Awards points when a customer’s Shopify email marketing consent becomes Subscribed.
It reads Shopify’s own consent state, which means it doesn’t care where the subscription came from. A customer earns whether they subscribe from your loyalty panel, at checkout, from a signup form on your site, or if you set it in the Shopify admin.
The fields
| Section | Field | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rule Name | Rule Name | Required. E.g. Join our list — 100 points. |
| Rule Reward | Reward | Required. The opt-in bonus. |
| Eligibility | Require a verified email address | Only award customers whose email Shopify has confirmed. |
| Eligibility Period | Start / end date | Optional. |
| Earning Limits | — | Fixed, not a control. See below. |
| Inclusions & exclusions | Customer tags, products | Optional. |
| Rule Status | Active / Disabled |
The limit is fixed at once per customer, ever. The form states it rather than offering a control, because the rule enforces it regardless: someone who unsubscribes and resubscribes is not awarded again. That’s deliberate — the alternative is a points farm with an unsubscribe button.
There is no Points Holding Period. Consent fires once, on change, so a deferred award would never land.
How customers qualify
Three things worth knowing before you launch this, because each one surprises somebody:
- Customers who were already subscribed before you created the rule are not awarded. The rule pays on the change to subscribed. Your existing list doesn’t retroactively earn.
- With confirmed (double) opt-in, customers earn when they confirm the email — not when they submit the form. If your confirmation email is slow or lands in spam, so does the award.
- This reads Shopify’s marketing consent. If your mailing list lives in a separate email platform, make sure your Shopify sync is configured there — otherwise subscribers may earn points here without ever appearing in that platform.
Worked example: 100 points for joining the list
- Go to Settings → Earn points and click Create rule.
- Under Account, choose Subscribe to Newsletter.
- Fill in:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Rule Name | Join our list — 100 points |
| Reward | 100 |
| Require a verified email address | Off |
| Rule Status | Active |
- Save.
Why 100 and not 500. An email address is worth less to you than an order, and the award should say so. Pricing it near your signup bonus makes the mailing list look as valuable as membership itself, which invites subscribe-and-leave.
On the verified email checkbox. Leave it off unless you’re seeing abuse. Customers imported from another platform or created at POS often have no verified email, and turning it on silently excludes them.
Tips
- Launch it after your welcome bonus, not with it. Two awards on the same signup screen reads as one confusing offer.
- Check your double opt-in setting before you advertise the points, so the promise matches the timing.
- Mind the sequencing if you’re migrating. Import your list into Shopify before creating this rule, or the import itself may look like a wave of new subscriptions.
- Say what they get in the rule name. “Join our list — 100 points” is the whole offer in five words.
FAQ
Can a customer earn this twice?
No. Once per customer, ever, and unsubscribing then resubscribing doesn’t reset it.
My existing subscribers didn’t earn anything.
Correct — the rule pays when consent changes to subscribed. It doesn’t backfill an existing list.
Someone subscribed but earned nothing.
If you use double opt-in, they earn on confirming, not on submitting. Also check whether Require a verified email address is on.
Does this work with Klaviyo?
It reads Shopify’s consent state. If Klaviyo is your list, make sure Klaviyo’s Shopify sync is set up, or people can earn here without appearing there. (See Connecting Integrations.)
